Red Neck Redemption

I think all married men and women can relate to this on some level! I know i can.

Red Neck Redemption

I was settin’ in church Sunday thinkin’ about where I was goin’ to ride my Harley to later that day and waitin’ for the singin’ to start. In walks my wife of 30 some years. She had made a dish to bring to the church homecoming dinner and was runnin’ late as usual. I came on in earlier  ‘cause I didn’t want to be late and have to sit in a front pew. I moved into the isle to let her in just as the singin’ started. She had her makeup on and her hair done up and lipstick just right as usual. Me, I just throw on my cleanest shirt and a pair of slacks, run the comb through my hair, and even shave, if she nags enough. For some reason I bent over and whispered in her ear that she looked nice today.

She gave me a look like “who are you and what have you done with my husband?” You see, she could probably count on one hand the number of times I’d said that to her in the last 30 years. I was always busy thinkin’ of fishin’ or football or ridin’ and roamin’ to pay her much mind. I guess God had had enough of my apathy and put those words in my mouth and smacked me in the back of the head until I spit ’em out. She grabbed my hand and held it as we set down from sngin’. I went back to bei’n my usual distracted self and didn’t think much more about it.

Later that day as she talked and I half listened she mentioned “Her compliment” and thanked me. The way she said it you’d thought She’d just won a “Red Neck’s Wife of the Year” Award or sumthin’. I started to get a funny feelin’ in the pit of my stomach. Why, I even turned off the football game and looked at her. One little compliment and you’d think I’d bought her roses or somethin! Such a little thing for someone who does so much! I felt about 2 inches tall. I should have said it a thousand times. No, that’s not even close. A thousand times a thousand times, now that’s more like it!

My head still hurt from the attitude adjustment the Good Lord gave me that mornin’ and my eyes were misty and hard to focus as I tuned on the TV. After all it was the game of the week and I had plenty of time to change. I’ll start first thing tomorrow!
