Angels don’t come with wings and harps, they come as every-day people that make a difference. I am currently spending the quarantine taking care of my ninety-two-year old father in Jamestown, Tennessee. We needed some supplies so I had a list of everything that I thought we would need to make it through the month.
I asked Shane Huey, who manages the local Walmart, when would be the best time to take dad to Walmart to shop.
“There is no good time for him to shop at Walmart right now, but six am on Tuesday is designated for senior citizens. They clean, sanitize and stock the night before.”
I understood what he was saying. I didn’t want to take him out but I didn’t have a choice.
Later that day I got a text from his wife Amanda. It said Shane would bring whatever we needed. I didn’t want to impose. Chock it up to my macho stubborn bullheadedness. I gotta do it my way. I had already set my alarm for five am with the intention of dragging dad to Walmart.
A little later in the day after thinking it over I texted OK to Amanda and gave her my list. I thought sometime Tuesday after his shift Shane would show up with some groceries.
We were already in bed Monday night when I heard a knock at the door. I fumbled around and got dressed. My phone rang a few moments later. I stumbled to the door to find Shane loaded down with Walmart bags. We kept our distance like good citizens. He put the groceries on the table and went toward the door to leave.
“Wait a minute! How much do we owe you?”
“The first delivery from Walmart is free!” he said.
I knew that wasn’t true but I speak fluent Macho so I understood what he was saying. I knew I would diminish the act of kindness by trying to pay him.
The next morning it took dad two hours, an Alka-Seltzer, and a nitro pill to get his morning routine finished. Shane saved the day.
Of course I couldn’t shake Shane’s hand or hug him but be forewarned, Shane Huey, when this is over you’ve got a big bear hug coming!
YOU ARE OUR ANGEL!
