It Always Happens
It always happens, sooner or later
A declaration of independence they make
From parents who’ve nurtured from infants so small
These child-people who now know it all.
Different forms their rebellion can take
From peaceful protest to armed conflict and hate
Up from within these feelings do boil
For freedom from teachers and parental control.
After all they’re eighteen, a graduate of school
They have all the answers every lever and tool
To face life alone without Mom or Dad
The ingrates! After all the opportunities they’ve had!
Whether yours declares independence from Tianaman Square
And bursts from your arms like the rockets red glare
Or gently tugs the umbilical till heartstrings all break
One thing’s for sure, this is a step that all children must take.
So let go, Mom and Dad, you’ve done your best
It’s up to them alone to face life’s test
After all, it’s not the end of the road
But a beginning with the new generation equal to old.
